Hugh Pickens writes “ABA Journal reports that the chief of the International Monetary Fund may claim consent as a defense to accusations that he sexually assaulted a maid at the Sofitel Hotel in New York as defense lawyer Benjamin Brafman told the judge he believed the ‘forensic evidence’ was ‘not consistent with forcible encounter.’ Police have said the maid knocked on Strauss-Kahn’s door and called out, used her master keycard to open the door, and left her work cart in the doorway, a typical safety practice in hotels. According to the police account, Strauss-Kahn emerged naked, tried to attack the maid, and then shut the hotel door when she tried to escape. The NY Times explains how the key card evidence may play out: ‘If the defense for Mr. Strauss-Kahn maintains that the encounter was consensual, its version will have to accommodate the unambiguous computer record of her leaving the door propped open,’ the story says.”

While you might be happy that your preferred liberal or conservative news hits you, you’ll never get to see the converse. This is because Google, Facebook, newspaper sites and even Netflix filter what hits you before you get to see it. And since they give you what you want, you never see the opposing viewpoints or step outside your comfort zone. It amounts to a claim of censorship through personalization, and now that every site does it, it’s becoming a problem. Pariser calls for all sites implementing these algorithms to embed in the algorithms ‘some sense of public life’ and also have transparency so you can understand why your Google search might look different than someone with opposing tastes.”

Trailrunner7 writes “Researchers at the French security firm VUPEN say they have discovered several new vulnerabilities in Google Chrome that enable them to bypass the browser’s sandbox, as well as ASLR and DEP, and run arbitrary code on a vulnerable machine. The company said they are not going to disclose the details of the bugs right now, but they have shared information with some of their government customers. The vulnerabilities are present in the latest version of Chrome running on Windows 7, VUPEN said.”

My next project will be in the Windows environment so what approach and methodology is best for developing, say, the automation required for a test system? I don’t want to use things like Cygwin, as I need to integrate with Windows applications such as Exchange and Sharepoint. Is there a list of should and should not dos when it comes to Windows automation?”
